I have a brand mew 2.3ghz macbook pro running Lion will not play with my year old 48' SAMSUNG TV. The computer sees the TV but the tv blinks on and off....wont stabalize :(:(:( used Belkin converter and monster cable hdmi

I thought I had heard something about HDMI TV connectors not working on 2011 MacBook Pros and iMacs due to the addition of Thunderbolt...
 
People said the TV/converter needs to support mirroring over Thunderbolt as well. Don't quote me on that.

Looks like you'll need to buy some new hardware, whenever such thing comes out.
