Change the View menu, selecting "Show All Devices"
Then, select the device line for your external drive (it shows some manufacturer info, directly above the name "UNTITLED"). When you have that line selected, change the "Scheme" to GUID Partition Map (instead of Master Boot Record). Then, you will see the APFS choices after you choose Format...

My recommendation is that you DO NOT format it for APFS.

Instead, use HFS+ (Mac OS extended, journaling enabled, GUID partition format).

Now it can be used with older Macs, as well (if necessary).

As others have said, you're not in the top drive folder when trying to reformat.

Has this drive only recently been released? Doesn't seem long ago I bought the DuoPlus and only the FitPlus (usb-a) was available in such a small size. At the time I'm sure it wasn't being sold yet.

It works - thank you! I've taken note of your advice for myself and my family :)

I didn't find the HFS+ format but it doesn't matter, I'm on M1 and won't go on intel ;)
