When unveiling the new Galaxy S25 lineup today, Samsung did a "one more thing" announcement, introducing an additional Galaxy smartphone that's set to come out later this year. The Galaxy S25 Edge appears to be aimed at the iPhone 17 Air, a rumored ultra thin iPhone that's set to debut this September.

Samsung only teased the Galaxy S25 Edge, but the device is set to launch in the first half of 2025. With a debut date before September, Samsung will beat Apple and will be able to launch a super thin smartphone first.

Little information is available on the Galaxy S25 Edge, but it appears to be a thinner variation of the Galaxy S25. Samsung plans to price it below the $1300 S25 Ultra, suggesting it will be a middle-tier device with lower specs due to thinness, which is exactly what we're expecting from the iPhone 17 Air.

Both huge phone makers now competing on lowering specs for "thinness..." How did we all get so lucky to live in such a world where the race to a signature, new product innovation becomes one about SUBTRACTION.

Bring on the battery-less and camera-less phones. In fact, just skip on to paying "same great price" for an empty box... so that we can then pay more to buy back the stuff that used to be in the box as add-ons. ;)

Considering this will be out first, and Samsung will likely make the panels on any iPhone Air that does exist, it’s kind of hard to say who is copying who, if anyone.

Seems like Samsung came up with some ways to make a phone thinner and Apple is also using them. Not sure it’s actually a huge deal either way. I agree with other posters that making thinness a top priority and marketing feature doesn’t really appeal to me.

Either no credit has been to the original photographer and video on this article or MACrumors is at a SAMSUNG event. IF they are at this event, WHY? Just so they can claim it’s actually “Apple related” simply because they can compare Samsung devices to Apples’?
Because there isn’t much happening in Appleland while Timmy is at the helm of what has become a boring financial institution.

Cracks are appearing everywhere and I won’t be surprised if Timmy announces his retirement next year. 10 years to late if you ask me.

I know Samsung makes the displays, but aren’t they custom designed by Apple? That’s why companies like LG and BOE also manufacture them.

Actually Apple uses the same displays, they only give Samsung design changes to let them fit into the Apple chassis.

Storage in the iPhone are also from Samsung as will be the cameras in the future iPhone. So when you buy an iPhone it already is half Samsung 😂

... is "thin" really the selling main selling point of a device at the moment? I know bulky isn't great, but phones are already pretty thin. Like, I'm-scared-I-might-teach-it-yoga-if-I-sit-wrong-in-tight-pants thin...

According to a reporter a the Verge, everyone is super excited about this phone. She says they haven’t seen excitement over a phone like this for years. Yet the only thing she could say about it is it’s super thin. First, I’m not sure who she means when she says everyone. Second, she’s just showing how superficial the tech press is and how easily they get swept up in the newest shiny object.

From what I can tell there is nothing special about this phone other than it is really thin. I remember the days when this same tech press would take swipes at Apple for being obsessed with thinness and prioritizing form over function. Now they’re all losing their minds over a phone solely because of how thin it is.

I don't claim to know the in depth details, but I get the impression that it's Samsung coming up with the technology, built to Apple's specifications. Kind of like TSMC and the chips. Apple can't design what TSMC can't build, same for Samsung. They can design what they want within the limitations, but I believe it's Samsung/TSMC mostly coming up with the actual ways to do it.

So yeah it's definitely mutually beneficial. It's also why LG and BOE don't get the big, fancy new technology orders. They can't do it, not the way Samsung can. With something like this, I think it's a combination of Apple asking for something and Samsung having a fancy new technology to implement.
