I know that sand manages to get everywhere at the beach. I was just going to put my phone in a Ziploc bag. Do you think that'd help? Would it scratch up my screen?

At least get one of the heavy duty freezer bags. Sand cuts through the thinner sandwich bags really quickly.
I did that a few days after I got my iPhone, and sand STILL got in. IDK how, but I will say that method didn't work for me. My phone didn't get scratched though 
I use 2 small ziplock bags but alternate the opening side. It works great I use it on the beach all the time

DryPac and a few other companies make excellent waterproof bags for electronics that are relatively inexpensive and work superbly. You can buy them at Bass Pro or any sporting goods store with a decent Marine/Boating selection.

When I go to Maui I just leave it in the car or condo...I don't need to call anyone on the beach, I'm there to relax.
You could always put the extra plastic bag over you head ... if you get the urge.

Usually I don't take my iPhone to the beach, however, during the one or two times that I have, I kept it in a water proof case, which also kept the sand out as well. They are only a few bucks on eBay.

I do the Ziploc at the beach and it's always protected every generation of iPhone I have had. It has to be the good quality ones, not bargin brand. I also like that you can still use the phone through the Ziploc.

put like 2 layers of saran wrap and rubber bands on top and bottom that way you can still pick up the phone when someone calls or need to use it...thats what i did..
To be fair, they have those "finger-only" gloves that kinda look like birth control when in the package

I went to the beach recently and used the bag in the link. No problems whatsoever and i had the phone in my pocket the whole time i was out in the ocean swimming around, no water and no sand got into the bag. http://www.aquapac.net/usstore/mini-waterproof-phone-case-br-104-1119-0.html
