SanDisk this week introduced the SanDisk Creator Phone SSD, a small, portable SSD that's designed to be used with Apple's MagSafe iPhones. The SSD has MagSafe compatibility, and it attaches to the back of an iPhone magnetically.

An included USB-C cable then connects the SSD to the iPhone, allowing the setup to be used while on-the-go. SanDisk's SSD is compatible with Apple ProRes recording.

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro models can be connected to an external storage device over USB-C, and recorded ProRes files can be stored directly on the SSD. Requirements include write speeds of at least 220MB/s for 4K60 ProRes, and 440MB/s for 4K120 ProRes and a USB-C cable that supports 10Gb/s transfer speeds at a minimum.

SanDisk's Creator Phone SSD supports read speeds of up to 1000MB/s, and write speeds of up to 950MB/s, so it is fast enough to be used for ProRes recording.

The SSD has a durable silicone shell, three-meter drop protection, and IP65 water and dust resistance, which means it is able to handle some moisture exposure. SanDisk is offering it in 1TB and 2TB capacities.

The 1TB model is priced starting at $110, and it will be available for purchase this spring. The 2TB model will be priced at $170.

Yes, it's actually $$D(ebt). ;)

update: it appears the original post to which this joke applied has been deleted. So like hearing the punchline without the setup, now the above line prob makes no sense. I'm not actually poking at the pricing of this device, as that doesn't look too bad relative to market rates.

Certainly as elegant as solution as simply having a micro SD card slot in the phone. 🥴
At least it's price competitive, and you can "transfer the files" to your desktop by simply unplugging it from the phone.

If I used my iPhone to create lots of video, this would be a great practical addition. Cool little product.

Edit: I wonder if I could couple this with VLC to stream movies while traveling…?

I'm going to assume you're not joking. micro SD isn't fast to record ProRes.

I can't help but wonder if recording at 4K120 (even with ProRes enabled) would just... not go over well due to stressing the phone so hard (i.e., lead to visual artifacts, require ideal lighting conditions). Pretty sure even 4K60 has this effect. Btw, if you're recording 4K120 ProRes, maybe go for an 8TB SSD...

I personally have a 15 Pro Max and when I want the absolute best-quality footage I record 4K30 with ProRes enabled (I just hate 24, especially when the camera slowly pans). Seems to work well.

It would seem they’re a little late to the rodeo. There are lots of MagSafe compatible SSD enclosures that support up to 2 TB SSD's for a fraction of their price. There’s also one that include a hub. Personally, I have to download my ProRes from my cinema drone. That means I need a USB port that goes to the phone, and to the hard drive along with the drone at the same time. Just having a hard drive means you can only download whatever small amount you happen to have in free storage on your phone. My cinema drone is a one terabyte SSD and I need to load it into the 2 TB portable enclosure I have. So this means I have to have at least two USB-C ports, the Sandisk has only the one to go to the phone. You have the same problem if you want to download from an external device like your camera. This only works if you’re using it for stuff your generating on your phone. For the price their asking it is far too much.

i wish someone would make MBP attachable drives. The closest thing I’ve found are the BaseQI MicroSD trays.

I like this….when travelling (where 5G is expensive, WiFi slow or no connect at all) I daily dump pics & vids to an external drive in case I loose, break or get robbed of my phone. Usually hide it in my dirty hiking underwear for good measure….too much information? Information wants to be free!!!

so what does the MagSafe do here? - connection is via USB-C anyhow
