I am not much into video, but suspect that shooting at high definition, high frame rate and pushing the data out to a device would tend to use quite a bit of power.

Would it not make sense for a device such as this to consider providing both power and storage? If storage alone is using both USB-C and Magsafe, there is no option for using any other power source. (Only frequent recharging.)

Perhaps others with experience of shooting this sort of video, and to whom this device might seem to appeal, clarify if I am being sensible or excessively negative?

Apple should look into creating some sort of MagTransfer standard so devices like these can transfer data without needing to connect to the USB-C slot. Maybe the EU wouldn't like it though?

cool idea; we've seen this done many times on amazon. BUT what has me banging my credit card on my desk is the planck ssd also unveiled at ces 2025. at this point, i'm dead set on the purchase. Planck SSD - The Verge
This dude must be involved with the project he referenced, that’s the only logical explanation for his post: SanDisk’s offering costs $170, this chinesium “Plank” costs $300 … and “will launch via KickStarter” 😂 Have fun with that, I’ll stick with SanDisk.

this was not unveiled purely as a concept, this was unveiled with a kickstarter campaign and a following launch in the spring.
Hahaha 100% involved with the project. “Guys it’s real, I promise!”

Cringe.

Or at least have some kind of power passthrough like a second USB-C port on the drive. I don't know how Qi/MagSafe would work in a passthrough environment

I am surprised they have just not made a case with an integrated M.2 drive in it. Fast and small.

Certainly as elegant as solution as simply having a micro SD card slot in the phone. 🥴
At least it's price competitive, and you can "transfer the files" to your desktop by simply unplugging it from the phone.
SD cards and SSDs are not even in the same class. Just look at your Amazon link. Only 160 MB/s read speeds and 90 MB/s write speeds. This San Disk SSD has read speeds of up to 1000MB/s, and write speeds of up to 950MB/s.

The SSD is over 10x faster which is needed to actually record in ProRes.

buddy, i first saw this on 9to5mac. i don’t have affiliation with the project lol, i just think it’s cool.

Considering the number of consumers that would use this feature this is a better solution then micro sd. Most people never will need it

you’re also forgetting that while sandisk’s offering is a big puck that snaps to the back of your phone, the plank ssd adds practically no extra bulk to your phone. we’ll have to see if the kickstarter campaign is successful, but i have very high hopes. you have fun being paranoid and unable to have a respectful conversation, i’ll go my own way

Or he is just a 12 year old tech youtuber wannabe. ShiftCam does make a bunch of iPhone accessories and launching on kickstarter is not unheard of either. ShiftCam also sells stuff directly in the Apple Store. Companies like Anker and UGreen also launch products on Kickstarter all the time.

SanDisk this week introduced the SanDisk Creator Phone SSD, a small, portable SSD that's designed to be used with Apple's MagSafe iPhones. The SSD has MagSafe compatibility, and it attaches to the back of an iPhone magnetically.

An included USB-C cable then connects the SSD to the iPhone, allowing the setup to be used while on-the-go. SanDisk's SSD is compatible with Apple ProRes recording.

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro models can be connected to an external storage device over USB-C, and recorded ProRes files can be stored directly on the SSD. Requirements include write speeds of at least 220MB/s for 4K60 ProRes, and 440MB/s for 4K120 ProRes and a USB-C cable that supports 10Gb/s transfer speeds at a minimum.

SanDisk's Creator Phone SSD supports read speeds of up to 1000MB/s, and write speeds of up to 950MB/s, so it is fast enough to be used for ProRes recording.

The SSD has a durable silicone shell, three-meter drop protection, and IP65 water and dust resistance, which means it is able to handle some moisture exposure. SanDisk is offering it in 1TB and 2TB capacities.

The 1TB model is priced starting at $110, and it will be available for purchase this spring. The 2TB model will be priced at $170.

The New PLANCK from Shift Cam, looks a much better option, much smaller, lighter with much better connectivity, at least in my opinion

The PLANCK, looks a much better option, certainly more practical and not as cumbersome

Qwiizlab makes a MagSafe-compatible aluminum puck case that supports short M.2 NVMe drives, up to 1,000 MB/s write speeds, with pass-through USB-C PD charging. $37 for the case (no drive).

Acasis makes one for $20 (also no drive), also aluminum, but it doesn't have pass-through charging. They claim 300 MB/s with a phone (what phone?), 900 MB/s with a desktop/laptop.

You can get a good 1TB M.2 2230 NVMe SSD for right around $100.

Personally I'd much rather have one of these types of cases+drives than the SanDisk, assuming they are fast enough. Especially the Qwiizlab one with the pass-through charging. Reviews say these things work and they're fast, but they get HOT and they suck power, which is why you want pass-through charging.

Why the heck, can't they bundle a nice hook shaped usb-c cable of exactly the right length to nicely fit this setup ...
