Has anyone tried creating a bootable drive from the following portable SSD:

sandisk extreme 500 portable ssd

I currently am cloning one and just want some idea if you guys have already used this as an external boot drive.

Any SSD will work fine as an external boot drive. Any drive at all, for that matter -- though obviously a spinner will be very slow to boot.

You don't need to clone if this makes things easier. If you want a clean boot drive, CMD+R on startup, format SSD through Disk Utility, then select 'Reinstall OS X' to the external drive. Otherwise if you want all your stuff as it is, that's fine what you're doing. :)

got it, just tried it out as well, worked like a charm. now i wish i bought a larger capacity version. this thing gave my mac a new lease on life. I was working off a slow 5400 spinner drive.

What Mac do you have? And is this through USB 3.0? Am thinking about doing this for my iMac 4K

I have the 2016 21.5k iMac, 2.8ghz model. it worked fined. yeah im booting through usb 3.0 it makes a worlf of a difference.
