Are SanDisk nice? Yes, absolutly. Can it defeat the big Apple name? No, no way! I recently purchased the new classic, and I was considering getting the Zune, but iTunes and Apple are what made me go back to apple.

DO NOT buy a Zune!! I have one and the hardware is "ok" but the software and marketplace stink. I love my iPod!!

Not going to happen...this won't hurt the nano.

Apple is likely the only company that could kill off the iPod with one media player.

I guess I was fine with the controls since I don't use an ipod much. Yes, I thought the interface of the Zune was just as nice as the ipod in its own way. Then again i would never by either(zune or ipod) for the sheer fact that my needs are not met.

Ahh. I guess my time with an iPod spoiled me. Trust me, once you spend time with an iPod, you'll look at the Zune and think that interface is subpar. Although if you have spent time with both, I guess you just have a different opinion, so you can discount this:p

Out of curiosity, how does neither meet your needs, and what do you use instead?

That thing is ugly compared to the iPod nano i mean really. SanDisk thinks its all about the hardware and not the software. If its going to kill anything its going to be the rumored flash based Zune.

the nano is the most popular mp3 player in the world it wont hurt it

Would you like to restate that? Because the #1 mp3 player in Korea is from Samsung or some Korean brand. The same goes for Japan as they are loyal to products from their country. Then again mp3 playing dictionary are pretty popular in Korea.

No, I have spend many days with a Mini i am modding and with my friends photo ipod, I still find the zune interface to be just as nice. I organize my music myself, so I don't want a intermediary software I am not fond of, so UMS is key feature for me. I would like something that is 3in or larger(at the time I was looking for one not many options), built in voice recording is another nice feature as I use it to record lectures. Plus I have 2gigs in ogg and flac files that I rather not take time to re-encoded to mp3.

I actually like that, but have no experience with SanDisk to say whether I like their interface or not, functionality, etc. On paper it is statistically great, but it lacks iTunes, so therein it won't win out unless it can prove that they offer a much greater means of media organization (which I doubt they can).

Individual markets/countries can have different #1 players, but I think if we looked at the overall #1 for the world, it would be an iPod (any of the many varieties).

The device can be ums, which means you can manage it from explorer finder, or what ever the os uses. It would be like dragging files to an external HD.

Perhaps Korea, but in Japan it would appear that the iPod is still quite dominant, unless things have changed that much in the last year.

Apple also admitted that it has seen iPod market share increases across multiple territories. In the U.K. it holds 40 percent, Japan 54 percent, Canada 45 percent, and Australia 58 percent of the music player market.

So much for loyalty.

EDIT:
Apple Q107 Conference Call said:
If you look at iPod and look at the share that we have, we're over 70% in the U.S., we're over 60% in Australia and Canada, we're over 50% in Japan and Hong Kong, and really growing on a year-over-year basis in most of Western Europe. We feel we're very competitively priced.

I'm surprised about HK being so high too.

I had the privilege to use one of San Disk's players and I must say after using it for less then a minute I felt like throwing the thing against the wall and taking a sledgehammer to it. It was the small one that completes with the shuffle and after using it I can see why the shuffle doesn't have a screen. The controls were absolutely horrible and navigating with the screen was atrocious. What's more sad is that it was my grandma's and she kept calling it an iPod. She just thinks any MP3 player is an iPod and I didn't even correct her as I didn't want to hurt her feelings. If she asks me to help with it again then I'm gonna have to let her know. Oh yeah another great thing about it is the splinterpack it comes in. Don't you just love those.

I had a similar experience, except it didn't last long enough for me to need to throw it against the wall. It just stopped working after a few days. It belonged to my brother, so he just took it back to Best Buy and bought an iPod instead.
