Hi guys, would like to ask if the Sapphire Radeon 5770 would work on the Mac Pro 3,1 or there are versions of the 5770which do not work in a Mac pro 3,1. No Visual at all.
I must also state that since i did not the power cable for the 5770, i power it externally, hope this is not an issue.

I did try the 5770, power it externally and successfully boot in a hackintosh. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm pretty sure it will be OK.

I have a HIS HD 5870 running in a spare 2,1 Mac Pro. I also had an HD 5770 running in this 2,1 cMP so the 2008 cMP should be more than OK.

You can also quite safely power a HD 5770 using the motherboard Mini 6pin to 6 pin cable, absolutely no need for external power unless you have another GPU in the cMP as well

Having said that, the HD 5770's 6 pin socket MUST be powered.

XFXGPUs can also be used but be warned they often are " non-reference ".
I have a flashed XFX HD 5770 which works very well but only one of the DVI ports works. The other DVI & Mini-DP show bootscreens.

The MSI Hawk HD 5770 was the best of my three 5770s.

Hi, thanks.

I do not have the power cable at this point of time, hence the external power.

Could it be that the 5770 is not recognised because the 6pin port has no connection to the 5770 ? I do not have any other card attached.

If it is not EFI flashed then you will not be able to see the bootscreen.

Thanks for yr reply. Pls bear with me.
So even it its an oob card, we still need to flash the Efi ? If yes, then my post above is answered.

I also came across this https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/978894-pc-ati-57705870-cards-flashed-to-work-with-mac-pro/

This basically says that the method used to flash therein is out of date, right ?
Is the method shown in youtube safe to tried ? Thanks man.

You can learn to do the EFI flash by yourself.

Sign up for the Netkas forum.

Take your time, read all the pages in this thread

I started. as an absolute noob in the Netkas forums but slowly learned.
I have since EFI flashed 6 AMD GPUs

After you read everything I'll help you flash your HD 5770.

PS : If you get the Mini 6 pin to 6 pin cable from China it will take a long time to be delivered.
Amazon is quicker and this cable is very cheap.

By the way, your Mac Pro can run later AMD GPUs such as . .

HD 5870 1 gb ( Metal not supported )

===========================

HD 7950 3gb Metal supported & Mojave OK

R9 280
3gb Metal OK ( upgrade for the HD 7950 Metal supported & Mojave OK

HD 7970
Upgrade for the HD 7950 ) Metal supported & Mojave OK

R9 280X
3gb ( upgrade for the HD 7970 Metal supported & Mojave OK

All of these cards can be EFI flashed but need these cables

1. DUAl Mini 6 pin to 1 x 8 pin

2. DUAl SATA to 1 x 6 pin.

All of the above probably looks complicated and scary but it's actually quite simple.

PS : send me a "PM" ( personal message) If you want help EFI flashing & general AMD GPU info.

Don't buy an already flashed GPU, it's not hard to do it yourself with assistance.

I also recommend getting either a HD 7950 or even better . . .a Sapphire DUaL-X 3gb HD 7970, off eBay, they're cheap now.

The Sapphire 7970 will leave a HD 5770 or dead . . also . . I have the EFI ROM for this card.

NOTE : Which Mac OS version are you running now ?

Nope, not buying any flashed ones. Will attempt the guide/link which u gave.

Not planning on getting other cards until i try the 5770, but will look around for 7970. If manage to get a good one, will ask for your assistance since u have done a 7970.

The Mac is in El Capitan. I dnt use it, got couple of years ago since the price was ok. But it seems that now i ought to try and test wht the 3,1 is capable of..... in 2020 !

I ve lasi read that the 3,1 can be pushed beyond El Capitan, i am sure you have pushed yours :).

My Mac Pro is a 2009 4,1 flashed to 5,1 ?

The 2010 & 2012 Mac Pros are the best to have especially when it comes to upgrading the CPUs.

When asking for help in Macrumors it's good to have a "SIGNATURE" you can make a SIGNATURE to describe your Mac Pro.

Go to your Macrumors member profile & type in everything to describe your 3,1 Mac Pro

QUESTION : Have you read EVERY page in this thread ( as I did ) on the Netkas site ?

NOTE : Easiest way to install the EFI rom is by first installing Widows 7 ( or WIN 10) or it's own HDD / SSD on your Mac Pro. then install ATIflash & GPU-Z

To boot from Win 7 or Win 10 select it in "Startup disk in your Mac pro Preferences.

What procedure did you use ( details ) to flash the 5770?

Have you dumped the ORIGINAL 5770 ROM and saved it with an appropriate name EG : " ORIGINAL SapphireVaporX-ROM.ROM" ?

Which GPU Power able are you using for the 5770 ( photo ) ?

why do you need 2 cards on MP3.1 since HD 5770 can provide bootscreen and run perfectly on MP3.1 up to SH OS. Doinng this will draw lot of power and create even more heat inside your unit. i Have a MP1.1 flashed EFI and SMC of MP2.1. everything was running perfectly with my flashed HD5770 card. i got apple boot screen, booted thru pcie SSD (as external boot drive) with 6GB+/s. and the card provided 3 output sources, 49" ultrawide on 4k resolution and 2 27" LED monitor as 2nd and 3rd. I think just the HD5770 is enough for your system. 2 cards will add up 300W at least just for the GPUs, unless you want to grill some bbq inside your MP and blow the PSU.

Hi,

I'm in the same boat, upgrading my mac pro 3.1 with the ati radeon hd 2600 xt to a radeon hd 5770.

I thougt the maximum supported resolution was 2560 x 1600?

Anyway, i ordered a xiaomi curved monitor with 3440x1440 resolution with hardware PBP dual screen support.
My intention was to feed it with 2 x 1720x1440 resolution signals over 2 displayports (don't know yet if 1720x1440 resolution is supported in osx and or the 5770 card)

But you run 4k on the 5770 together with 2 monitors in which resolution?

Can i run the xiaomi monitor in its full 3440x1440 resolution over 1 displayport cable?

And what display port cables do you use? Does it matter which ones?

Thanks

I run the main monitor on 49" 3840x1080 beside 2 1920x1080. I also tested with my other 43" on 3840x1600 without a problem. You need to run main monitor with DP tho. For 1720 resolution i believed you need to connect with dvi or else it won't detect and gives you either 1440, 1600 or 1920.

Maybe not detecting but, with holding the option key pressed when selecting scaled resolutions? See included screenshot.

The 5770 has 2 mini displayports so i thought to just use the xiaomi picture by picture option to use it as 2 seperate monitors. I'm not gonna use more monitors.

Thanks for your reply!

I see what you meant now. So you are trying to use the 3440 in split mode. Btw i forgot to mention that i didn't flash the card with 5770 rom. I flashed with 5870 rom, 1st flash failed, 2nd flash succeed and my card was amd radeon 5770 black and red stripe.
