The issue of dropping Watch with increased weight is a problem.
Dropping an aluminum with ion-x(more shatter proof than sapphire)has a good survival rate.
Yes,expensive watches use sapphire, but most are extremely water proof and have crystals up to 4mm thick to deal with water pressure, not so with Apple Watch.

There are no waterproof watches. There are only water resistant ratings. That's regulated by the Federal Trade Commission.

the other issue to consider is that the Sapphire screen is darker than the glass screen. makes a difference in bright sun light using dark sun glasses....
How can you say that there are no waterproof watches? What does that even mean?
While it is true that those are ratings, doesn't make a diver watch any less waterproof now does it? You dive with a dive watch, like a seikos or omega diver, no water gets in, that waterproof in my book. Would you agree?

Because there is no such thing as a waterproof watch. The Federal Trade Commission prohibits "Waterproof" from
Watch manufacturers to exist.

Forget watches, there is nothing "waterproof" at all. Eventually, under enough pressure, something will crack, allowing water in. Just because you dive with a dive watch does not make it waterproof, merely water resistant. At enough depth, those dive watches will break.

Regardless, it's NOT just about the Watches "Breaking", it's the ingress points that water pressurizes against the casing, which intensifies based on the ever changing pressure levels that the Watch is subjected too.

"The FTC realized “waterproof” misrepresented products, specifically diving-type watches never have been completely under normal use at specific depth ratings. Subsequently, “water resistant” is used to describe watches water impenetrability to a stated depth. There are no technical differences between a waterproof watch and a water resistant watch. The same engineering design and techniques are used to keep the inside of a watch case dry."

if you can't get the scratch off, go back to the store. Saphire face should not scratch.
Once, I bumped mine into a public lamp post. I thought it scratched, but turns out: the big fat scratch was a bit of metal or dirt from the post. Eventually it wore off, took about 3 weeks. The saphire front though: still intact and no scratch to be seen.

Thats either a defect from the factory (came like that), or definitely a scratch in the coating. That is not a scratch in the sapphire.

Sapphire actually can scratch, but it's very difficult to do. But the protective oleophobic coating naturally will wear off with use and wiping with cloths, etc. The oleophobic coating is organic.

very difficult indeed: only diamond is tougher. So, if you've got a scratch, go back to the store. I'm not talking about the coating.

I've had my Apple Watch Series 2 Stainless Steel for some time now, previously I had the Apple Watch Series 0 Sport Edition. The Sapphire Display does hold up great, I've nudged it into all kinds of things and there is no noticeable scratches on the screen.

But the polished stainless steel on the other hand scratches. There are micro dents and scratches all over the stainless steel housing. I didn't expect it to really hold up any better, past experience from various iPod's and other devices with polished glossy metal has always end up looking worn pretty fast.

Whats funny to me is the fact that the rough aluminium coating on my Series 0 Sports Edition held up much better compared to the polished and glossy stainless steel on my Series 2. So you are trading a harder display with a body that will look worn more easily compared to the Sports Edition.

I suppose the Ceramic Edition is the one to go for if you don't want your watch to look worn. Sadly, the Ceramic is only available in white, a colour that doesn't really fit my style at all. And the price is rather steep, I think the price of the stainless steel is too expensive to begin with but as I used my Series 0 every single day I opted for something that looked a bit more classy.

But I'm not even one year in, and both the casing and my stainless steel bracelet looks really worn. I don't really mind it all that much, but I'm very interested to see how that will affect the resale value if I want to replace it for a Series 3 down the line.

Yes, stainless steel is rather soft, certainly softer than aluminium oxide. The good news is, it can be easily polished to look like new, unless you've got some really deep dents or scratches.
