No and why would you even consider that?

15k RPM drives are extremely loud and produce a lot of heat.

I can see why you'd want to, but although SAS and SATA use the same physical connections, the MBP doesn't have a SAS controller, so it would be useless.

It'd be loud and hot and you'd do better with a 256GB SSD

I wasn't actually going to buy it, just had one lying around. Can I use it with a external closure and use it as a back up drive?

In case that you've got an external SAS enclosure (which I haven't seen yet), yes. Otherwise, no.

Suitable for a MacBook? I doubt that.

You'd need a dedicated controller with external SAS connectors for that type of enclosures. Such controllers are PCIe based, hence not compatible with a notebook whatsoever.

How do people get these things just "lying around"?!

    That's a good one! Get it! :)

That's the problem, can't just get a USB/eSATA-type enclosure for SAS, maybe a PC with a SAS card running as a Linux server would do it...

Usually a cast off from your place of work...

Used rackmount servers end up being like $100 on craigslist, and I'm talking dual 3ghz, 4gb ram, dual 72gb scsi drives, etc.
