I read somewhere (can't remember for the life of me) that the new iMacs released earlier today are still running 10.6.6, and updating to 10.6.7 is not an option for some reason.

Could it be that the system has to be updated to 10.6.7 or a special build of 10.6.x to get the proper kext for SATA 3?

/glad that Apple put an above average GPU in the new iMac for the first time in a while

    I hope it is true.

I can foresee a future when SSD will be at par with HDD in terms of price & capacity.

I doubt an OS will alter SATA features. I'd have thought you'd require a FW update instead and even then i'm not sure you can alter SATA generations as opposed to SATA speeds.

Either way, whether it's a firmware update or OS update, hopefully it's there.

Reminds me of the old SATA 3.0 vs 1.5 on the unibody MBPs a couple years back that Apple had to push out an update for, in order to get 3.0Gbps operation.

I remember. But were those originally S2 ports throttled to S1 speeds or where they S1 ports which converted to S2 ports via a FW update. That is the question.

Hopefully these are S3 ports throttled to S2 then.
