Not too long ago my MBP mid 2012 i7 crashed on me. I was running a CS volume (replaced optibay with SSD) and one of the drives had crashed. After some troubleshooting I realized both drives were functioning properly. So I became fairly certain that either the SATA port (to the stock harddrive location) was messed up, or the cable.

What is more likely to occur on the MacBook? Would it be worth buying a new SATA cable and giving that a shot?

The cable failure issue is much more common and sure worth a try IMO.

Do you have any suggestions as to where to buy this cable? Is this something I can cheap out on? Thanks in advance.

Also, I looked up the installation and it seems pretty straight forward. Does anybody have anything to say on the installation?

I usually get parts like that from iFixit. It is as easy as it looks to swap out. I've done a couple.
