Not too long ago my MBP mid 2012 i7 crashed on me. I was running a CS volume (replaced optibay with SSD) and one of the drives had crashed. After some troubleshooting I realized both drives were functioning properly. So I became fairly certain that either the SATA port (to the stock harddrive location) was messed up, or the cable. What is more likely to occur on the MacBook? Would it be worth buying a new SATA cable and giving that a shot?
