Seems a bit limited. Takes up 2x 40Gbps ports but only provides 56Gbps of connectivity

At this point, I think I'd be ok with simply using, long, hanging dongles but this will work out well for those who need it.

This is actually nice. Seems solid and reasonably priced compared to some of the stuff out there.

Why not just use a decent "x to USB-C" cable for those times you're using something that doesn't have a corresponding port on the MBP? ?

How thick are those Ethernet ports with a spring-loaded hinge that fold down when not in use? I’ve seen that as a dongle-free solution on other slim laptops, but I genuinely don’t know how thick they are. (A hinge seems pretty un-Apple, but their SD reader does leave half the card hanging outside the instead of properly fully seating with a spring, so they do make some weird choices already.)
Yeah I would have liked such an ethernet port to be built in as well. The attached image is from a HP Zbook from 2016 and existed in laptops before that as well - so those slim Ethernet ports are not exactly new. I don’t know the exact thickness of the port though.

My company ordered a brunch of Dell laptops with those kind of ethernet ports, those ports are fragile (for those who really plug and unplug ethernet on a daily basis) and need frequent repair... At the end Dell gave us USB->Ethernet dongles (for free) to "fix" the problem...

unless one really love USB-A or have to use it a lot for some reasons (say need to use Davinci studio license dongle? constantly got USB-A thumb drive from clients ? ) I don't see much value of this. I have such kind of hub but that was back when Mac has no HDMI and no SD card and this hub has no card reader nor HDMI port. If it has a 10Gb ethernet I'd get one (but those are usually bigger and run hot)

I'd love to have one USB-A port on my Mac...but i think getting a USB-C to "USB-3 micro b" cable would ease some of the problem.

What are you referring to here? The first gen of MacBook Air had a single USB port, there certainly wasn’t anything hidden behind a hinged area.
No, the original MacBook Air also had micro-DVI and a headphone jack. The rev 1 (Late 2008) MacBook Air - the one I owned - had one USB-A, one mini-DisplayPort, and of course the headphone jack - all accessible via a little hinged section.

While the hinge isn't obvious from this picture, here are the ports on both models.

Wow, I have no recollection of this at all. I don’t even understand the point of the hinged section, what was it supposed to be achieving?

Apple should make a 10GbE to Thunderbolt 3 dongle. I know it's probably low demand but...

If you remember the earliest MacBook Airs, they had a significant curve along the bottom near both sides, and tapered to almost a knife edge both on the sides and at the front (the later revisions moved to the mostly flat bottom + narrow flat side style "wedge" they use now). Having a hinged door was the only way they could put ports on it that weren't at an unusable angle - otherwise the ports would have been partially facing down towards the table.

The alternative would've been to have a short section along the side that didn't taper - which I imagine would've violated Ive's design ethic somehow.

Would be nice if there was a usb c hub like this but with multiple usb c ports.
I have this one:

All ports are USB 3.1 Gen2 (10Gbps). Under 20 bucks.
