Indeed. This is such a strange product for the newer MBP's which now have sufficient ports.
I can see it being more useful for the MacBook Air.
I have an M1 MBA and there are FAR less expensive hubs out there. Issuing a new hub like this for $80 makes ZERO sense. I paid $20 a year ago for a hub with everything this has except the HDMI port (which I didn't need, but could have bought for $10 extra).

I bought a satechi for my m1 and it got ridiculously hot and my battery life suffered. both satechi and apple said this is pretty normal. happened with a scan disk usbc / usb comb flash drive did the same thing. I am staying away.

MacBook Pro already has three Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports, an HDMI port, and an SD card reader, so you're really spendig $80 to get back the two Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports this is blocking (not to mention the loss of the 3.5mm jack), two USB-A ports and a microSD card reader. What a deal! 🤣

Agree, pretty pointless. I rather have a TB4 all USB-C dock station, which is much more useful. Pretty crazy how much connectivity with M1 Macbook pro

This satisfies a need for me as a MBA M2 user. I need four USB ports, with at least one being USB-C, as well as one video output, and I don't want an external power adapter. Not to mention, it's one of the first accessories that come in Midnight. When you add the 20% discount in, $60 for a such a product is a no-brainer if you don't need full fat Thunderbolt. Otherwise, you're paying $130+ for four ports, and that includes a power brick. Bought one.

Use case if anyone is interested:

1x Samsung T7 Shield SSD
1x Maschine MK3
1x MIDI Keyboard Controller
1x Self-Powered Audio Interface
1x External Monitor

The question is: does the 4K HDMI port support 60Hz? It is usually not the case for these hubs. Otherwise it’s all the ports that should be included in standard even on the MacBook Air.. but the price is fairly ok.

I bought a couple USB C to USB A dongles and updated all the cables of my legacy devices to USB C. I did this is 2016 and never looked back. I agree that dongles get lost but if you permanently connect them to your cables this can’t happen.

I'm increasingly bewildered by the persistence of new hubs with USB-A ports. I haven't bought an A device since… 2016? Aren't we all caught up by now?
Agreed, anything I have that was bought (or designed) before USB-C I’ve replaced the cables on. It’s not that expensive, and it cleans things up well.

EXCEPT

Flash drives. Lately I’ve bought a couple with USB-C on one end and USB-A on the other… but… still plenty of USB-A flash drives laying around. I’m still getting new ones, some devices come with a flash drive with documentation/etc. And, one of my 3D printers uses USB-A (which was the purpose of the dual-headed flash drives to begin with).

Some day, I will find all of those people that have a requirement for microSD card readers everywhere.

Still looking...
Every drone pretty much out there now uses Micro SD cards. Im sure that is a small piece of the pie you are looking for.

You can end your bewilderment by stopping by your local Best Buy. Go in to the computer section and count how many computer accessories they stock that come with USB-C connector. Wireless keyboards and mice? NOPE. Printers? NOPE. Scanners? NOPE. Webcams? UNLIKELY any, but maybe a couple higher end models might. USB speakers? NOPE. Backup batteries? NOPE. USB flash drives? There are literally one or two brands that do USB-C. The vast majority are USB-A. That's just to name a few categories of accessories.

Now, YOU may not use accessories (or buy ONLY Apple peripherals designed for MacBooks), but the rest of the world still buys accessories and not many come with USB-C.
