I use two of these providing up to 3GB/sec when connected to a TB4 port. It is all aluminum that provides an excellent heat sink.

Yes, Blackmagic speed test says my OWC SSD enclosure is just as fast as the Mac's internal SSD.

The trebleet one has 2 NVME slots and a CF Express card reader as well as some extra USB ports.
And an external power supply, so there is that.

You can just get an OWC Envoy Express enclosure, which is tiny and can be attached to the back of your display completely out of sight. I got mine on sale for $60, half the price of this Satechi thing.
Yes, there are options. Welcome to the internet.

For some reason I just don’t trust this kind of setup. I did have a failure on a similar setup a while back and went right back to just buying the extra storage from Apple for the ridiculous price because it’s always been super reliable.

Anyone know if a

Lexar 8TB NM790 SSD PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 2280 Internal Solid State Drive

would work in this housing? Found NO Mac specific compatibility reference anywhere on the web today.

You all need to be aware of a tiny foot note that the SSD drive has to be formatted for your computer OS before installation into this enclosure.

Which is first, the chicken or the egg?

Oh really? Aluminum? Where's aluminum? Outer case? What about that black internal part? Is it plastic as usual? How is thermal dissipation organized? It does not convince me. I've just imagined inserting something like Kingston KC3000 there and giving it a proper load. How quickly will it degrade, or will the internals melt? Those SSDs look strange on their promotional photos. Maybe without chips they remain cooler 😂
Some very angry and cynical sounding people around here…
I’m guessing they’re using the top aluminum casing as a heat sink, similar to many MacBooks.
And believe me - no one’s gonna make you buy this thing if you are pissed off about it.

You can pick up a few 2TB USB3 enclosures for 15 bucks each. No need to spend insane money.

All these super bespoke accessories will just inflate landfills one day.
So will all the generic ones. And it's not that bespoke; you can connect it to other stuff, it just won't look purty.
Technically the OWC enclosure I bought for my G4 Mini is still compatible with anything I have now (unless it had Firewire on it; I'd have to dig it out of the closet to check) but it's extremely obsolete. I think it had a mini-IDE connector for the hard drive.

alternative complaint(s) might be:
- your SSD of choice as a practical matter might not saturate the connection, and as a result
- you're missing an opportunity to stick 2 or more NVMe SSDs in the same footprint.

Using OWC Envoy Express for years.
It's an old TB3 enclosure not so fast, but reliable, portable (I can hide and protect it) and it works with trim.
I've noticed how hot it can get. An aluminium enclosure is needed. Won't buy this one.

Yes, I got the 4TB version and works perfect.

I wish a manufacturer would simply put a NVme drive bay in a keyboard enclosure.

But I guess if they did, some yahoo would try use a kvm with it. 🤣

Great to have expansion options. But, I’ll stick to paying the ridiculous prices for internal storage.
That would be fun. But KB manufacturers don't want a keyboard to require a Thunderbolt 5 cable. That would increase the cost significantly. Keyboards are still happily running along at USB 2 speeds. Not to mention wireless would make ti even more complicated since so many people don't want a USB cable at all.

Unless they are wireless for the keyboard, and T5 for the SSD? I suspect ACASIS makes such cheap enclosures there's no way to make money on keyboards that have NVMe slots.

Yeah, there are too many things that could “go wrong” with such a design. But I like your idea of a wireless option for the KB. Still, it’s all fun and game until someone boots from the SSD.

PS: I smiled when I saw your handle. Adds even more cred to your comment, as someone who probably has no shortage of T5 cables.
