Save files from interent to iPhone?

I want to save PDFs directly from a site to my iPhone. Is this at all possible?

I need access to PDFs from nature and other sites that require a licence to view full scientific articles.

I got tethering working and just use that process, but I'd prefer a more legit method, especially considering that I am not downloading large files.

What's tethering?

I wish they let the iPhone be more like other phones.. plug them in and they act as USB flash drive... just copy files over. No silly sync.

You can get some apps that can store and view PDF files for you. However, you have to save them on your computer. The one I used accessed my iDisk.
