I'd like to create a saved search (smart folder) and place in the dock as a stack.

You can do something similar with an Automator action. Essentially, you set Automator to use Spotlight to find items for you. Then you use Automator to create aliases of those items in a particular folder that is in turn placed on the dock.
The downside to this is that the icons are shortcuts and don't preview the actual files.

This sounds like a great idea. However, I am not familiar enough with Automator, and it does not seem self-explanatory enough.
Can you give some guidelines as to how to do that?
Also, how do I refresh the folder with short-cuts, that is, how do I rerun automator constantly?
