Saving files in folders

I am still very new to Apple and my iMac (which I love!). I have recently converted over from using PC's. I am having some problems learning the file structure with Mac OSx. Let me start out with giving an example. In windows let's say I have a folder called "A". Let's say I am working on a project and I want to save it in that folder on my desktop. In windows you click "save as" then drill down to find the folder you want to save the file in. On my Mac it gives me the option for "desktop" but how do you pick a folder on the desktop to save a file in?

I hope that wasn't too confusing.
Any help would be great!

Theres a tiny little arrow-down button right beside the file name you are typing in. Press it, and the window expands giving you access to your whole computer.
