Am I mis-understanding something, but is there any way to actually save and keep those rented movies from the Apple store?

Surely someone has worked out how to do this in the same way that Audio Hijack can save any audio playing on a Mac and Videobox can save most 'unsaveable' embedded video?

They are protected with DRM. So not really possible.

But if you burn DRM protected songs bought on the iTunes store to a disc, you can then rip them off the CD with NO DRm - simple. Would that work for the movies too then?

Songs are bought, not rented. You are basically asking us how to steal movies. That's not allowed around here.

If I rent a DVD for a week I can watch it as many times as I want during that week and it usually cost slightly less than the Apple system. So can I do the same with Apple store 'rentals' or after I've watched it once is that it?

As I live in Australia where we can't rent these movies, I've also set up an iTunes US store account. Is that illegal too?

Watch it as many times as you want within the 24-hour limit.

If you don't like the terms and conditions that come with the Apple system then don't use it. Don't try and justify theft.

    OK, point taken.

As a children's author about to sign two movie deals, I certainly don't want to lose any potential income.

    On the other hand . . . :)

Frankly, which movies are worth keeping these days.?

If you find a really good one through rental, go buy it.
