Lee, perhaps this is the wrong time to be suggesting this, but when you're over it, it's probably time to get a new kitten. You won't forget Stump, but you'll spend a lot of time transferring your affections to your new friend. It always seems to work for us. You'll have a new buddy to enjoy, and lots of fond memories of your old one.

I second this suggestion, but give yourself time to mourn. Misty died 3 months ago, and I'm now finally ready to find another kitten. She won't be my old cat, and I'll make sure not to choose another gray tiger. But I'm ready to move on.....

Dude, I'm feeling it for you. We've been through one death of age. Lost one to dogs - not even a year old, very sweet cat. Lost an orange tabby to the road - great personality, slept on my pillow. Recently a sweet black kitten ran away. At least we never found her. She would get under my covers and put her head on my pillow like a person. This has all occurred over 17 years of marriage.

All that said: we have two healthy three year old cats. And a (sort-of) thriving 16 year old. The 16 year old has had nine lives - he's really been through it. He had the kidney problems, but I force fed him the canned food special diet, and he pulled through. He's still the boss around the family.

Anyway, I'm not sure I could be as brave as you are being today.

In a few months, get a kitten or two. The love having playmates!

Good suggestion Thomas Veil. :)

Thanks again everyone. I managed to drag my butt in to work today and it was a good thing to come. It was a hard night, but I slept well. I took all his stuff out (the litter box, food bowls, etc.). That was a good thing to do as well. While I'll be taking some time to process everything, I have been considering taking my friend's siamese cat. She's very sweet, but my friend's other animals torture her relentlessly to the point that she constantly hides from them. She loves me a lot and is always glad when I come over. So, in a few months we'll see.

Sorry to hear that Lee... I'm sure it's been said numerous times already, but you did the right thing for a creature that deserved no less from you. And in time you'll love another...

I know some of you know that my cat has been dealing with a brain tumor. I finally made the call to the vet today and we'll be putting him to sleep tomorrow.

I will miss him. He was my best friend for over 14 years.

That's so sad, I can't even imagine.....I love my cat (<- see avatar) and I would freak out in your situation.

My deepest sympathies.

:(

My sincere condolences my friend. I recently had to give one of my cats away because she wasn't getting on with our other one and it broke my heart. I know that she will have a better life with her new owners but I miss her terribly and I know you must be too. Hang in there dude!

It seems like most pets die because of being run over by traffic. I wish there was something that could be done to prevent this - (besides keeping the pets indoors obviously)

A week after our cat died from being run over.. numerous crazy thoughts crossed my mind - flashing collars so motorists can see the pets at night, motion sensing collars that could give the pet a 'buzz' so as to alert him of an oncoming car.. :( Weird ideas i know, but when a pet thats more like a family member dies, you think of everything possible you can do to avoid it from happening in the future.

Not weird at all! I wish that everyone whose pets insist on going out at night would put reflective collars on them, it makes a huge difference!

Even the neighbor's horses wear orange reflective spats when they're out for a walk. They do look silly, but it totally keeps them from blending into the background on the road. (just to note, they only go out during the daylight but it still makes a difference)

Lee, I'm so sorry for your loss. Cats are family members too. They love us unconditionly and bring joy (and aggravation sometimes) to our lives.

They count on us to feed and care for them, including sparing them from suffering. Unfortunately, knowing that we've done the right thing doesn't spare us from the grief that losing them brings.

I'm sure that Stump loved you and you have, in turn, proved your love for him by doing what was best for him when it counted the most.
