I am attempting to recover from what appears to have been a power surge two nights ago. I am left with the infamous Spilling Beach Ball of Death (SBBOD), but what is weird about it is that it only appears to affect my admin account, not when in Safe Mode and not via a Guest account. I am missing something and can use some help before I throw in the towel and am forced to drop off my MacBook Pro to the Geek Squad (and wait an eternity to get it back).

I have a MacBook Pro i7, mid-2012, quad-core with 8GB of RAM. When the power surge hit, it scrambled my screen, and we lost cable, internet, phone service at the house. Later, after the internet was back, I attempted to log in as normal but after selecting the admin account, the unit freezes and I have the SBBOD. I have tried to cull through several forums and have tried the following:
- Disconnected all other hardware attached to the MacBookPro
- Did Apple Hardware Test -- no problem found
- Ran Keychain First Aid -- no problem
- Got into Safe Mode and removed all non-essential startup apps (only what I recognized)
- Looked at Activity Monitor (but I didn't know what I was looking at, and then again, it was in Safe Mode)
- Verified/Repaired permissions -- no problem found
- Did Disk Repair -- no problem

I am able to set up another admin account, which seems to be fine (no SBBOD), but now I'm faced with "giving up" and having to consider migrating all my stuff to the new admin account and praying that I don't introduce the same issue.

I've seen a reference to plist and Library files, but know absolutely nothing about them. With so many things apparently right (no hardware or permission problems, and other accounts semi-functional), it appears that only a specific part of the original admin file is corrupted. I'd like to avoid having to do the migration if I can solve the original problem.

Any suggestions? Is the migration route the way to go?

Many thanks for any help...

Rick

If it works in safe mode and does not work otherwise, that points to a startup or login items causing the problem. Safe mode bypasses any startup or login items. There are a couple places for startup items outside that login items screen, so you may have some items there.

Try this. Install and run the app Etrecheck. That will make an anonymized report showing all login or startup items. Post the report up here and we can take look at it for you and help.

Absolutely fantastic! I appreciate the quick response...
Got the app and generated the report...

Looks like you have some adware installed there for starters. Use the app AdwareMedic to get rid of it and see if that helps.

I would also uninstall the Kaspersky AV stuff. Use ClamXAV is you want to run an AV package.

There are also some crash logs there related to fontd. Try running Font Book app and select all fonts then validate the fonts and also check for duplicates. You will see both those options in the app's menus.

If that does not fix things, you only option is to work your way through removing some of those launch daemon and launch agent process until you find the one causing the problem.

It looks like you ran Etrecheck from safe mode. Run it again in regular mode if you can. Then the report will show which of those launch items are actually running and that will help you narrow it down.

You do have a lot of third party launch/startup items there.

Weaselboy...
I have good news... and more good news.
I got some additional feedback that suggested I do a SMC reset, which I understand is System Management Controller. It appears to have worked, and I am now able to log into my admin account without being frozen by the SBBOD.

The following is the EtreCheck report after having run the SMC reset and doing the things you suggested in your last post. I appreciate your insight into the this.

Rick
==============================

Problem description:

This is the “post” version of EtreCheck.app after the SMC reset was done and seemed to correct most of my problems. Per direction from Weaselboy, who I am seriously writing in as my beneficiary, I deleted Adware, uninstalled Kaspersky AV and ran the Font Book app. I’d appreciate any further feedback on the following report. I’m not used to “looking under hood”, so to speak, and appreciate learning.

Yay! That is good news. Glad you are fixed up.

The only outstanding issue I see there is one font that may be corrupt. Try going into Font Book and select the font and see if you can repair (validate it).

I can't help with the original problem but something that's a red flag for me the the fact that Time Machine is not configured. I hope you are using something for regular, automatic backup. All hardware fails at sometime.

Thanks for the input. I've put Time Machine on my ToDo list for today.
