I'm worried text will be far too small at that resolution and size.

Are you able to use scaling options to make it look 1080p while keeping the 1440p resolution in macOS Sierra or High Sierra.

I'm using a 2012 mini on a 4K monitor. Obviously I don't get the 4K resolution, but it scales nicely at HD levels. Not quite sure if that's what you mean...

Thanks for the reply, but that's not what I mean.

I meant like how the 4K imac scales at roughly 1080. So you still get 4k resolution, but text and icons appear as large as on a 1080p screen.

I think it's called HiDPI, like the other poster said. Like this:
