Bought a cheap Canon printer...instructions were vague a best....no phone number offer by canon....called 800.652.2666 they said they were canon and in LA but guy had a thick accent. Says to to this site and download app and I will take care of everything...so he then says I am infected and for a mere $99 he can take care of me...had a hard time getting rid of his application.
Finally got canon on phone and he says it happens all the time.
The MX 492 is a horrible printer with an LCD unlit readout and demands you put in your wifi password using technology that is years old making it difficult at best . I am sending this junk back to merchant.
 
Sorry to hear that. Similar happened to a friend of mine when she got a pop up on her computer saying it was infected and to contact a number to receive Microsoft help. She did and like yourself, downloaded an app and then they proceeded to scan her computer. This is where I stepped in and the short version is they wont contact her any more, I wiped everything and re-installed from scratch along with changing some items on her network. The app that was put on was a very resilient application and not easy to remove and had gotten into all sorts of stuff (this is why I preferred to do a truly clean re-install).

As for printers - yep, WiFi printers can be a prime vulnerability if they are allowed to connect either with no security or with just WEP (as opposed to WAP2 personal).

I have had nothing but problems with an inexpensive Canon printer. The WiFi setup instructions were horrible and it was difficult to setup. Luckily the printer was a freebe from Apple when I purchased my iMac. After using it for a year the print head gave up. In my opinion, Canon needs to stick with making cameras and get out of the printer business. :mad:

Its designed in China, made in China and pure cheap Chinese crap...they are well known for.
