Background: I am using an iMac OS 10.6.8, my scanners are an flat bed scanner (HP 3010) and a 3-in-1 HP Laser Jet M1217. I work in two different locations/states. My iMac travels with me. The flat bed is in one location, the 3-in-1 in the other. Both scanners have worked fine for some time. There had been no problem in simply plugging one in and proceeding.

Issue: On my last trip for the first time I used the 3-in-1 for not only printing, but also scanning and copying. Everything worked fine. Now when I have returned from my trip my iMac will not recognize the flat bed. When I start/restart my iMac the flat bed responds with the appropriate sounds. But when I try to scan I get an error message: No scanners are available.

I think that the iMac is locked onto the 3-in-1. I have checked and reset printer settings to my HP 2100TN printer (the one at the location with the flat bed). I have switched out USB cables. Started and restarted the iMac. I have done a test print to the HP 2100 TN. I have swapped USB ports on my iMac. But all to no avail. I have not been able to locate an ootion in the Preferences to set default scanner.

Can anyone help?

Thank You,

Lucca

I have a C5180 All in One and it has not bee working very good since Snow Leopard. It is my opinion that HP didn't do a good job with the Mac drivers/software.

You may have to reinstall the HP software, and try again.

Also you can try with Image Capture to scan.

And HP has a browser webpage where you can test the scanner. I don't recall exactly how to get there, I believe after following the trouble shooting instructions you get there.

But what has mainly worked fine for me, has been re-installing the HP software and adding the printer to the Mac System Preferences.

Scanner Recognition Solved

FYI:

Uninstalling the original HP software thenreinstalling that software from the CD that came with the machine did not work.

However, reinstalling from the HP website did work, and the interface is now slightly different -- implies that there has been a change in HP drivers and that not there is one specifically for OS 10.6.
