I agree with that... but then AMAZING that there were no tangible leaks until basically when Apple made the "Scary Fast" announcement. That's a LONG time for Kuo supply chain sources not to leak and a LONG time for Gurman's friends at Apple to not share a juicy morsel, etc. Basically there was nothing until about 10 days ago... with all pretty much resigned to "no new Macs until 2024."

Got to compete with Mac Studio as towards "best kept secrets" ever.

I mean it was a cpu refresh… it’s not exciting because it’s so iterative now

The only exciting thing is maybe the advancements they are making to the cpu architecture. GPU especially

But in the near and mid term future I think the majority of apples customers just want well designed hardware and software.

Even Intel Macs do most of what the majority of their customers need at the moment. Longer term the move to ARM makes sense but I think design changes to the hardware (including accessories) and working on the software are what most people would benefit from more.

The timing and limited scope of this ‘Scary Fast Spec Bump’ event doesn’t make much sense unless Apple is actually feeling pressure from Qualcomm.
Qualcomm is putting pressure on them. Apple has had their chips on the market for some time now. And there is no doubt every chip maker is cutting these things down and reverse engineering them. We need competition. Make sure we all get products we want.

I was so disappointed that Jaws didn’t show up for the event. He is the scariest Apple dude ever…

Well yes, no leaks. Look what happened to Prosser last year “leaking” a new AW design that was most likely Apple seeding intentional wrong data …
Kuo has changed quite a bit in the past year, I really think his “leaks” are drying out, and Gurman just throws stuff at the wall, look at this latest “newsletter” stating that Apple is working on a new mini, not detail, no timeframe, nothing… simple BS

I seem to recall a couple/few years ago Cook saying they will be “closing the leaks”, I think they’re making good progress…

I do not buy that Apple “feels” pressured by Qualcomm. When presumably laptops with these new QC chips hit the market they’ll be running Windows, not macOS. And they’ll need a few OEMs (Dell, HP etc) making them they are threatening Intel foremost and then AMD, not Apple

Mixed

Wait...why do rumors get dinged for earlier reports? That's a weird policy—for all we know, they both said that bc they WERE going to come out next year, and then Apple shifted its own plans.

I was accurate by correctly predicting it wouldn't be exciting. I don't think Apple as it is now is capable of producing anything exciting.
Ok, and entitled to your opinion you are, that’s all that your comment is

Everybody knows what is coming with every iPhone months in advance and we are already hearing about iPhone 16.

The most surprising thing about any Apple product announcement is if they launch something that everybody hasn't been expecting for months.

Why do they compare their own Silicon to machines running Windows with their potty graphs then?

Weren’t we also subjected to rumors that TSMC was having production/yield problems with the M3 that would likely delay or restrict availability?

I doubt companies as big as Qualcomm are reverse engineering Apple Silicon 😂

I mean it does happen but I think legitimate companies with well funded R&D divisions will be working on their own stuff.

For me the biggest joke was Apple's 2-hour time slot calendar invite that lasted only 30 minutes. It gives 'curb your enthusiasm' a new meaning. :)

So... Why did they change the event time, if there were no announcements concerning Japan or the Eastern countries anyway?

  • MacRumors published a report speculating that Apple's event would likely have an emphasis on high-end gaming on the Mac. The new M3 series chips for the Mac do feature hardware-accelerated ray tracing for improved graphics rendering in games, as the report mentioned, but the unconfirmed tip that we mentioned about the event having a Japanese developer tie-in was inaccurate.
When this rumor first surfaced and people suggested it was Nintendo, I was quite dismissive of the idea. But that was because people were talking about (real) Nintendo games on Macs or Apple acquiring Nintendo, neither of which will happen.

But it just occurred to me that there could be a very different angle here that I don’t think anyone else has said - Nintendo’s Switch Successor could use Apple’s M3.

This would be a major win-win for both companies. The Switch received a ton of third party games (unlike the Wii U). Presuming developers go through the effort of making their games run on the Switch’s successor, it’d be pretty easy to also get the game to run on Mac since it’s the same CPU - so there’s a win for Apple.

And it’s a win for Nintendo. Everything that makes Apple silicon (and ARM) great for iOS and MacBooks will also be fantastic for a portable gaming system.

There may be some… unease… in this marriage. Apple might fear Nintendo’s console stealing sales from their iPad, and Vice versa. But I think it can work. The fact Apple’s devices lack great physical controls hampers them in comparison with Nintendo’s consoles. And Nintendo’s Switch console lacked a ton of the apps that you’d normally find on a mobile device. I wonder if the two might sign a non-compete agreement - Apple won’t make an official game controller, and Nintendo won’t have a web browser.

… or the partnership could go deeper. Maybe Safari ends up being the browser for Nintendo’s console, and Nintendo makes an official controller for Apple devices?

IDK. That prior paragraph is extraordinarily unlikely. But M3 for a Nintendo console… sounds pretty plausible to me.
