Say what you will about AT&T - but today they impressed me with a mailing they did. Not sure if it went to all iPhone purchasers or just the new ones - but the collateral they sent explained that the phone could go international and the steps to take to make sure you're NOT billed for data usage when travelling (of course they also plugged their int'l data plans)

So score one (say what you want though) for AT&T for making it abundantly clear on how to avoid excess charges.

It's probably more covering their end, since users probably end up making the calls, then complain to ATT about some ridiculous charges, and then they get refunded. It also makes ATT "look" like they care about their users... Anyway that was nice of them ;)

Ultimately it doesn't matter WHY they did it. The point is - they made users AWARE of a procedure to avoid a headache. They could easily not have done it and dealt with the calls. From a business point of view there will be people that call and people that don't. Or people that call and can still wind up not getting a refund on charges.

This won't stop that - but at least they aren't ignoring the issue and TRYING to do something positive. It doesn't have to be altruism to be a good thing.
