Sorry for the newbie Q. Have MBP and FCE4. Need more HD space and want to use external. Not understanding mechanics of external scratch disk. Do I capture straight to external by passing through laptop, or do I capture to internal HD and then move to external and edit from there?

So, real Q is just how do I set it up?

Thanks.

Part of the idea of the scratch disk is to capture directly to it, so just set the external drive as your scratch disk when you launch Final Cut and you will be capturing to and editing from the external.

Capturing to the external is better and more reliable because you have the disk "dedicated" to just writing the footage, you're not sharing it with other running programs like you are with the internal hard drive.
