Made from the same materials used in helicopters and high-speed trains, the Retina display glass is chemically strengthened to be harder, more scratch resistant, and more durable than ever. The glass also features an oil-resistant coating that helps keep the screen clean.
everything scratches. even we do lol
Exactly! "Same materials .... more durable than ever" doesn't mean the same curing process to create the same product as those mentioned. Just that it is more resistant that the previous iPhones.
A lump of coal has the "same materials" as a diamond but it is not the same product.

I can't believe there are 13 pages discussing a scratch on a phone..
Some stories need comments turned off. "Hey, just in case some of you thought this thing would be indestructible, we thought we'd mention that it is indeed capable of scratching. Buy a case." /discussion.

Man, I can see the class-action lawsuits now.
"Golly, a SCRATCH!!!!! OMG how can it SCRATCH?!?!?! I only put it in my pocket with my keys, and occasionally toss it on a table. Oh, and I dropped it once."
Jeebus, get a damn case. Maybe one made of diamond or carborundum. WHY THE HELL DIDN'T APPLE make the case out of diamond or carborundum???? Oh the humanity.
We cant expect Apple to make any improvements in this area because it would hurt case sales. They dont build these phones to last very long anyway. Apple as perfected planned obsolescence.
my phone back already has got a pretty nasty scratch on the back.

I have no idea how it happened, wasnt dropped or bumped at all.
Its really hard to photograph, but the end towards the apple logo is pretty deep with little flakes on either side.
You did something to it. Slid it across a surface or something to that effect. No offense to you but scratches don't just "happen" out of the blue.
Glass is NOT scratch proof. Everyone should know that. You should also know that mobile phones (or devices for that matter) are subject to more wear and tear than stationary devices. Pockets, desks, tables, cars, seats, couches, knees, shirt pockets, wherever they go - they can get scuffed, scratched, dinged, knocked, dropped, slid, kicked, run over, crushed and thrown.
It's a fact of life.![]()
Obviously. However, I'm not carrying diamonds in my pocket or using a sandpaper table cloth. It's not that scratch resistant.
