How possible is it that the aluminum back side of the iPad Air to be scratched? So this raises the question of if its better to get a smart cover rather than a smart case?
Bear in mind that you can expect scratches on aluminium as standard wear and tear depending on how careful you are with the device. It's more durable than plastic, but it's still going to get scuffed.
It's an iPad - it has a design life of 3-5 years... it will get marks.

It will scratch easily if you place the item on something like a brick patio wall. I like my iPads to be naked and because of that I use this and can place it anywhere without fear of scratching. I highly recommend it. Do a Google search or go to Amazon and search there. I don't use the screensaver, but the Full Body Skin Protector is as if the iPad were naked. The cutouts are always perfect and their customer service is excellent. Skinomi® TechSkin - Apple iPad Air Screen Protector + Full Body Skin Protector It won't help with dents though. Just gotta be careful. Hope this helps!!

I have both the smart case and cover. The cover for when I'm at home and the case for when I'm out of the house. Case is navy and the cover is black. I had a red cover but it started to rip at the edge where magnet is so I returned it for a black one. I bought a new blue Smart Cover on eBay yesterday for £10, I bid £12 for it and couldn't believe I got it.
I think what Richardgm meant was that the back of his iPad was scratched but the cover did its job protecting the screen. I don't think he meant the cover scratched the iPad.

What I meant was that the metal hinge scratches the side of the iPad. That's probably the main concern. My iPad 4 had loads of scratches from that. Apart from those, not many others.
