Screen Brightness Keys Not Doing Anything

I am new to Mac, so excuse me if I have a setting set incorrectly, but when I press the screen brightness buttons on the keyboard, nothing happens. The icon on the screen changes when I press the buttons, but the screen itself does not change. This happens when the computer is both plugged in and away from the charger. Do I have a setting set wrong?
