But I'm sitting here looking at my 24' Alu iMac and can see the faint impression of 3 or 4 Safari windows. The thing is, from the text I can make out, at least the top one is a very recent window which wouldn't have been open for long. Also, I have a screen saver and the display goes to sleep.

For some reason the bottom left corner of the screen is most affected.

Any ideas what's happened? I'll try to get a picture but I suspect it might not come out very clearly.

Have you tried turning it off for 24 hours? You cant get screen burn but the Graphics card and Ram can have trouble refreshing themselves if you leave something on the same screen for too long.

screen burn is not possible on any LCD what you have is called image retention, or image persistence. i just wrote up a big thing about it this morning. it has nothing to do with RAM, nothing to do with the graphics card, but more about subtleties about how LCD screens actually work

Thanks for that, I'll try putting a white background up.

Sorry, I've no idea how I didn't find that thread when I searched. I'll get this one closed.
