Is there an FAQ (I have searched) on how to calibrate, reviewing the various tools and how to do it. Or even how to find out what screen type I have?

You can follow the guide you are offered during calibration within Mac OS X > System Preferences > Display > Color > Calibrate > Expert Mode.
To find out your screen model: Mac OS X > System Preferences > Display > Color > select a profile (no need really) > Open Profile ... > #17 / tag: "nmod" > Model
