Screen goes black on Macbook Pro--help!

I have been a frequent poster on this board lately, because unfortunately my Macbook Pro has been having issues as of late.

When I am in the middle of work, my screen goes black for no reason. I was informed by the man I bought the computer from that the computer is still running, just the screen is going black. Still, I have to hold the power button to shut it down completely, than turn it on again. At first (approximately 6 months ago) this only happened like once a week, but recently it has increased in frequency. Now the computer screen goes black several times a day, and it's really making work difficult.

I have received a host of suggestions on this blog--at first, I thought the screen was going black because the computer was overheating, and I understand it is a built-in feature for the Mac to shut off when the heat gets too intense. At the time I was playing Flash based games and streaming video, and was told that games like Farmville 2 are what was causing the problems. So I stopped playing games and only stream video occasionally, and still have the problem. I still have doubts that this is a "heat issue", since yesterday I had just started up the Mac (which was cool to the touch) and within 15 minutes of startup the screen went black again. The Mac was cool and still shut the screen down, which seems to disprove the notion that it was a heat related problem.

Then I thought it was perhaps related to the programs I'm using--today for example I was using iPhoto and the screen shut down. But the screen has shut down in various circumstances, from surfing the web to streaming video. So there seems to be no program that "triggers" this reaction.

The man I bought the computer from suggested I try to put it on a different surface--I am currently using a plastic table as a desk, but the computer is suspended off the surface with two roller skate wheels and two foam disks (trying to encourage air circulation under the Mac). I might try to use it on a wood surface and see if that helps.

Here are the specifics:Apple 15" Macbook Pro 2.66ghz i7, 8gb / 1tb Hi Res AG. I bought it in 2011. According to the Applecare site, when I plug in my serial it says it is from "Mid 2010". I don't think the fans run on high most of the time...I would hear it, right?

Right now, for example, it is quiet and only slightly warm, even though I have been uploading photos from iPhoto to Facebook and streaming Quicktime (which usually makes it heat up quickly). So I am flummoxed as to what "triggers" the screen going black!

Apple computers can develop some very strange screen issues that can't be explained. My 2009 has had an issue for the last two years almost where the screen won't turn on after opening the lid. I had to hard restart is and so burned through hard drives and hard drive cables. Still no real explanation as to why it happens.

Good luck! Hope you can get a real answer for your issue. I know I'd like one.

Thank you! I updated the software it suggested, and was all excited thinking that solved the problem. Yesterday I worked on the Mac and had no "crashes" (in other words, the screen didn't go black while I was in the middle of work).

However, today I was editing photos in iPhoto when it happened again. Here's the report, which I'm pretty sure is the same one I was seeing before:

Thank you! I updated the software it suggested, and was all excited thinking that solved the problem. Yesterday I worked on the Mac and had no "crashes" (in other words, the screen didn't go black while I was in the middle of work).

However, today I was editing photos in iPhoto when it happened again.

Yes, take it in when you can (has to be done prior to 3 years after initial purchase.) If you've followed the suggestions by updating to the latest patches and updates, and you still have the problem, then it needs to be brought in for repair.
