Screen on 3GC very dim

Hi.... I've just bought an iphone from ebay that apparently was working perfectly. Since I've received it the screen has been very dim - it's really hard to see any of the icons except in bright light. I've gone into settings to change the brightness - nothing happens. I've restored settings and resynced to itunes with latest software. Still the same. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this? I don't currently have a SIM in it - would that be causing the problem?

Did you try turning on/off auto-brightness? That might help.

Sounds like it's not just dim, sounds like the back light isn't on at all. Can you see it at all in a dark room? It sounds just like when my 3GS got dropped into water, the back light stopped working & I could only just barely see the display in bright light. Did you check your water sensors? Hope you weren't sold a damaged phone.
