Screen on/off while on call

I've noticed that every time I am on a phone call and receive a notification, my screen turns on and refuses to turn off. This is is when the phone is on my ear and the screen shouldn't turn on to begin with.

Anyone experiencing this? Tips on how to solve? It's happening on iPhone 5 and 6.
