A friend just moved and now her Macbook screen has this area in the upper left that is blank with a few lines and shapes within. The rest of the screen is ok. Anyone seen this and can provide a diagnosis?

It looks like a crack in the LCD itself. Your friend will have to take the computer to an Apple Store or authorised reseller and have it repaired. They will more than likely charge for it too.

Apple will only replace the entire display; they won't replace just the
LCD. The LCD's are available separately and the instructions are on iFixit.
