My screen now has fine, dark horizontal lines in groups that move up and down on the screen. Sometimes they flash. Sometimes there are ghosts of the dock or the top menu in the middle of the screen. The computer works fine otherwise. This is an iMac, 3 years old, with Tahoe 26.3.1 installed. Is this something that can be fixed?

Yes, it's the same across reboots. I'm guessing it's a hardware problem, since it's constant, no matter what program or internet browser I'm using, or just on the home screen.

If it's a hardware problem you could try a good small independent repair shop. Apple or anything certified by Apple will probably be expensive. Btw, you've posted an iMac issue to the iOS and iPadOS forum. You could also do a clean install just to be sure.

Yes. It's a simple fix by replacing the LCD panel.
Any repair shop with stock OEM LCD panels can do the job.

I am guessing you have variant of this fairly well known problem:

Screen Failure on 24-inch-iMac, M1, 2021 - Apple Community

Persistent horizontal lines appear on iMac Screen - Apple Community

Horizontal Lines on Screen of iMac, 24", 2021

Horizontal black lines covering bottom 3rd of 2021 M1 iMac screen

Grey horizontal patches on my M1 iMac 2021 model

Horizontal lines at the bottom of iMac(M1,2021) screen

Horizontal Lines on 2001 M1 iMac Display

M1 iMac Display vertex heating to scorching 55°C — Seeking Advice on Escalation

Horizontal Lines on iMAC with M1 chip

Possibly due to ribbon cable to the screen being pinched (i.e. a design problem). Apple might fix it for free if asked politely. Apple probably would in Australia if less than 5 years, but I don't think your consumer laws are as good (for the customer).

I have seen suggestions that this fault causes problems with more recent iMacs.

Thank you. I'm sure this is the problem. Looks as if Apple in the U.S. doesn't want to be bothered with these issues, so I'll have to decide if I want to pay for a new screen.

Apple has not issued a quality program on their site yet for the iMac M1 Screen issue. I can't remember how much time passed when they discovered an issue and do a quality program for a major component failure.
