I am new to the watch and was wondering if the general population (on this board) uses screen protection for the "sport" models

I don't, only because I think they look terrible with screen protection.

I have had my watch for around 2 weeks now and have two very fine scratches on the screen. I can only see these scratches with the LED on the back of my iPhone, however, they are there.

I don't really think you need it. I don't even use screen protectors on my phones anymore because glass has gotten so resilient against scratches these days. I'm pretty sure the Ion-X Glass on the Sport model watches is stronger than the glass in the iPhones anyway.

You should be okay as long as you don't rub sand against the screen.

I do use screen protector, the one you have to apply a spray to the film first and let it dry for 12+ hours. It doesn't cover the full screen but sticks pretty well to the corners. It's this one from the image.
