I am going to buy an iPad Pro for my law studies. I will be using the Apple Pencil extensively so I wanted to ask which screen protector is the best to get...

I know a lot of Youtubers recommend the PaperLike screen protector but I have also heard that it's very overrated and after a few weeks its full fo scratches etc...
Quality is important to me and I dont mind paying more if its going to last long and feel good to write on...

Any recommendations please?

Look for “Mobile Eh Review” on YouTube, he has done some testing, comparison and recommendation about paperlike alternatives.

I don’t know about the best screen protectors, but any matte film screen protector will eventually get scratches due to the nature of it’s surface material in my opinion. A glass screen protector generally will be more durable but definetly reduce sensitivity.

Personally I use matte screen protector from SwitchEasy for couple of weeks now and haven’t notice any apparent scratches. Bear in mind although writing and drawing on matte screen protector feels great, it’ll reduce the screen’s contrast and sharpness. Also the cheaper quality ones tend to gives those rainbow effect on light reflection.
Oh, and using Pencil on matte protectors also wears the Pencil tip quicker.

Yes that was the exact review I saw about the Paperlike screen protector which put me off buying it as I was just about to order it before I watched the video!

As I will be doing a lot of writing with the pencil I need a screen protector which makes writing feel like writing on paper....if I was primarily going to be using the keyboard folio I would get a glass screen protector.
I have also heard about the pencil tip wearing away...I guess I will just have to hope that it doesn't happen...perhaps not pressing too hard when writing?

I would suggest to just use common alternative brand “paper-like” matte screen protectors. On other thread, a guy said ESR matte screen protector also gives him no problem. Given the similar price range on these common brands’ matte protectors, I’m guessing the technology of the protectors are more or less the same. Just use it and replace it with a new one when it’s wears off. Avoid cheap ones and also avoid the over expensive ones.

Pencil tips are also cheap, so we shouldn’t worry too much about that either. Expect 6 months of heavy daily usage before it wears off, from what I hear from Illustrators that supposedly stresses the Pencil usage heavily.

Which one do you use?

As I said I will be writing a lot with the pencil so its important for me to have a good one that lasts and will not make the screen look too bad. Its a shame there doesnt seem to be a definite good matte screen protector for the iPad Pro...

I use iCarez' Matte screen protectors on my iPhone and on my iPads. I've used them for years now, since my 10.5 Pro.

Imo, view-ability isn't affected negatively enough for me to not like it. I got my 2018 iPad Pro 11 in February 2020 and I've read a handful of books on it already.

Love the no-glare and the feel of the Apple Pencil on the screen protector. No scratches either.

Can't recommend highly enough. I like them so much I pop them on my iPhone too.

I watched the review (Mobile EH), and I do agree with it. I bit the bullet and ordered a Paperlike when I got my new 12.9 iPad Pro. I used it for about 2 months. I have since removed it and I’n no longer using anything. I take a lot of notes, using notes, notability and Nebo My script. So far my screen is just fine. I also have a lot of experience installing screen protectors, and for 99% of them I can do it perfectly. I know glass protectors are easier than plastic (less stretching), but still I can do both with minimal air bubbles. The Paperlike presented several several issues with its installation, the last one being no installer tricks worked to get the last several air bubbles out, I had to live with them. I will say that writing with the Paperlike was great, but not worth it in terms of what it did to the clarity and sharpness of my screen. Simple put not worth the sacrifice of quality, especially in video and picture viewing. The price of the Paperlike was not an issue (I did buy one, it came with 2), the 2 month wait to get my order was not an issue, and I liked the feel of using it, the issue was plain and simple, not worth degradation of image quality.

Vine-boating, my advise is invest in apps for notetaking and document handling. I use PDF Expert, Spark (for email), Notability and Myscritpt from Nebo. Also plenty of iCloud storage so you can use the new improved files app for Apple. Your screen if treated right will be ok and last. Oh one other thing order a set of tips from Apple and keep them in your bag.

naked screen is the best viewing experience like it’s intended. But I can’t stand the oil magnet. Impossible to keep the screen clean.

Unfortunately I'm in the UK and they don't seem to sell them on Amazon UK.

I want a screen protector because I dont like writing on glass, I have tried it on my friends and didn't like it at all compared to with a screen protector (my friend has a Paperlike on).

Yes I will be purchasing Notability and Good Notes.

So does anyone know a screen protector that can be purchased in the UK that isn't the Paperlike which is good?

I have a paperlike screen protector and it is extremely overrated. It has about the same look visually as all the matte anti glare screen protectors but at the same time it’s too rough a surface for the Apple Pencil and I have concerns that it will wear down the tip much faster. I also got a matte one from icarez and it’s amazing lol. It’s got the matte look but at the same time it doesn’t have the roughness that causes that Apple Pencil squeak that is like nails on a chalkboard to me. It also offers a paper-ish feel that the ipad glass alone cant provide me. All in all it’s not completely horrible, but for the price but I cant recommend paperlike at all. The icarez one is going to be going back on.

Unfortunately the icarez screen protector doesnt seem to be sold in the UK. I have seen people recommend it a couple of times...but it seems its an US only product sadly, not on Amazon UK or anything...

Does anyone in the UK own a matte screen protector they can recommend

It's a shame the UK does not sell the icarez one as it seems to be highly rated.

I have to add to the iCarez recommendations. Looks and feels EXACTLY like Paperlike at a fraction of the cost. I’m VERY impressed after having a Paperlike on my 11” iPad Pro and loving it…this iCarez is EXCELLENT.

Paperlike is great, but it scratches over time (like 6 months) and when you’re paying that much for a screen protector, it’s hard to justify the continued cost. iCarez may also scratch, but when you get two for around $8 as opposed to 2 for $39…it’s a no brainer.

(Sorry to our UK friends that can’t get iCarez…👎🏼)

I go with a glass protector on my iPhone but a film protector on my iPad. I like the Elecom protector. It gives the paper like feel and was easy to install. I bought the one for the 2018-2020 11 inch iPad on my new IPP and it fits perfectly.

Someone else in Macrumors recommended the Whitestone Dome protectors. I did buy them but the 2 in the package were defective. Both had a small crescent shaped mark towards the middle that would not lay done. No dust underneath - bubble would not lay flat - almost like it was missing the adhesive in that spot. The Elecom installed very nicely.

I personally don't like matt or glass screen protectors, I always use clear film on all my devices.

I prefer MediaDevil, a little pricey…

Cheaper film screen protector…..

I’d also second Media Devi….good product. I prefer glass for a cLear install, but for a clear film, it’s a great way to go.
AmFilm is the best glass out there for the price. Thin and durable.
