Better safe than sorry is why I use a Zagg shield on all of my devices. Ups the resale value down the road.

Screen protector necessary iPhone 4???

Screen Protectors are a HUGE waste of $ and time.
I bought one for my iPhone 4 and had them install itnin the store and it started bubbling and peeling off. I bought one for my IPad 2 as well, and wastedb5 of them since they bare so hard to install, and then the last one I couldn't even get it on right. It was $30 and it wasn't even cut right to fit, and yes, I knew it was the right one and had it installed today and it already is peeling. I have spent over $100 on screen protectors. What a waste of time and money. What a scam. Just buy a good, protective case for it instead!
