I am not sure what you require in terms of pixel density to read a book properly, but my iPad2 kicks ass for ebooks. It would never have the clarity of e-ink, but is more than readable.

...and reading a teeny, tiny iPhone screen (comparatively speaking) is so much better than the large iPad screen...right!

Don't get me wrong...I love my iPhone...but I REALLY love the screen real estate I get with my iPad...

ExCtly why we bought ipads

Seriously? What did you expect, it's a 10 inch screen. Do you study the words while reading? Sure the phone's display looks better, but reading isn't like watching video, more pixels doesn't give sentences more detail.

I'm sure someone told him to read between the lines, so he bought an iphone 4, but he cant figure out why he still can't see text between the lines, since his phone has a retina display.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

So, foolishly I bought the iPad2 after just a casual appraisal of its performance in a store.

After using my iPhone 4's 'Retina' display and now trying to use the iPad for reading, I realize just how dumb I was. The iPad2 screen is awful for reading.

Should have waited for the next generation; do you think it will be high res too? (God I hope so.)

Oh yeah. It's just terrible for reading. We're all with you there.

Maybe you should get a Kindle! That would be swell, eh?

Funny. Thanks for all the piss-takers out there; I've got the slapping I deserved.

Just FYI, I didn't get the iPad solely to be an eReader for myself. Actually, it's for mostly my son, but yes I did want to read some things on it too.

I guess what meant to say is that I now fully understand why the iPhone screen got all the hype; it deserves it.

It's not that I can't read on my iPad, but it's just ugly in comparison (to what I've unwittingly got use to). I find that although, yes it has a bigger screen, I have to zoom in a lot more often which kind of defeats the purpose.

So anyway, back o the original question:
Will the iPad 3 get a screen res bump?
What are the odds in your opinion..?

Cheers

Sorry you feel that way. Not taking the piss at all. I myself like most here just have a difference of opinion. You will always find people who disagree with you and have different view points.

I do have to disagree with you. It's pointless comparing the iPhone 4 to the iPad. The iPhone 4 certainly doesn't deserve the hype and the term retina display is just a fancy marketing term. That is not to say that the retina screen doesn't look better then previous screens but it's not a giant leap forward. It is easier to read but it's still not as easy to read as the iPad's screen in my opinion. On the iPhone I often have to zoom in or use it in landscape mode in order to read text. I don't have to do this on the iPad. The iPad's screen is just fine.

If Apple wanted to up the resolution on the iPad they probably would have done it on the iPad 2. That is not to say they won't do it on the iPad 3 but I don't think they will include a retina type display as it's probably still cost prohibitive on larger screens.

Odds are very good. Samsung just came out with a 2560x1600 tablet lcd, which will most likely be placed into the next gen ipads. It will place the screen density at 300dpi, which is similar to the iphone 4.

Omnivision also just came out with a super slim 5MP camera. So we'll probably also see that in the next revision as well.

Sure, I can change the font size to match but I'd fall victim to Repetitive Stress Syndrome from constantly turning pages.

I'm a Baptist, and yet I totally agree with you. Being a person of faith in no way means we are all such gullible fools. Unfortunately, some are very much so.

Just got the ipad 2. Sure, its not the best but I find it acceptable for reading. Decided to get it since don't want to wait until ipad 3, I'll just sell my ipad 2 when it comes out.

???

Screen res on the iPad is just fine. Maybe you need to clean the screen or get your glasses fixed. It's a lovely screen, reading is easy.

It all depends on the cost. If the cost is such that the iPad can be sold at a comparable price to the iPad 2 them yes. If the cost is prohibitive then no.

The God Delusion :D
Have you tried the Audiobook? Dawkins is an awesome reader and it really adds to the book, a lot of his other's on are audio too.

I have both the eBook and aBook

For my own Edification. What does scripture say? Something about "... We don't know when..." and "... beware of false prophets... "

Although I am an Atheist I try to educate myself so that I understand other people's belief system.

It's about to get all PRSI in here.

What's "PRSI"

Whilst I can understand to some extent, I think you are over-reacting a bit.

I've been spoiled with the razor sharp screen on my iPhone and indeed the iPad screen looks a bit "soft" in comparison, but it's far from a crap display... it's colourful, with good contrast and the overall size makes it a far more enjoyable experience for browsing etc than my iphone.

Would it be better with higher res? Of course, but it's still very good in the mean time!

at the risk of alienating most members here, I have to agree with the OP.
The ipad 2 screen when solely compared to the IP4 display is 'underwhelming'...especially for those who have been using the IP4 since last yr.

However, in real world usage, it is more than acceptable. It's just fine.

If and when the retina display shows up on the ipad, most will agree that it will be a joy to behold!

I'll never understand why people say things like this. The size of the text is exactly the same on my phone as on my ipad. You just have to flip the pages more often on phone. I know that matters to some, but it's really not a huge difference if you're just reading text.

Really? Ok, how about you start buying your paperback books in 2" x 3" size, you know like those little novelty ones.

Read a long novel on my iPad for school and it was a better experience than a regular book... The screen res wasn't an issue.
