I went looking but obviously I am lost. With my niece and nephew moving in with me (along with their mom) I want to keep the Mac locked up. So I would prefer a solution that requires a password at power up as well as locking the screen after non use.

Is this simple? I have no "accounts" other than default

Yup, go to System Preferences --> Users & Groups and set it up like this:

Then go to System Preferences --> Security & Privacy and set it up like this:

System Preferences > Accounts / Users & Groups > Login Options > Automatic Login
