Screen Sharing app in ML hogging tons of CPU on rMBP

In order to do some web testing, I am trying to connect to a Windows XP box using the screen sharing app(over VNC) but it is extremely slow on my rMBP. When it first start up it is usable but the CPU keeps on going up and up till it hits about 400%, and at that point the system becomes unusable. Has anyone else had this problem? Were you able to solve it?

Which screen sharing app? Which VNC? Does it happen on a non-Retina Mac?
