Not sure if this the correct forum to ask this BUT I am in need of a program to record footage of my screen very much like the tutorials they have in Youtube. What programs can I download, free preferable, to allow me to record on video my screen which is Mac compatible.

Quicktime player has this feature built in now. file / new screen recording.

I had a look, couldn't see 'New Screen recording". Should I have to download a new version? I will take a look anyway?

Sorry you need "Quicktime X" that comes with Snow Leopard. If you don't have that, use one of the other options Jolly Giant posted. I use Snapz Pro personally.
