screen size problem with imported videos

not sure if this is the right forum, hopefully someone can help me out

i am having issues with some of my imported videos.

example:

an episode of friends (or how i met your mother) is about 2/3 the size of my screen (tv) the sides are black

but say ELF is full screen

i am using handbrake, and using the ATV presets, is it just the file on the dvd?

Sounds right to me; Friends was 4:3, which would display vertical black bars on both sides of the image on a 16:9 display.
