I have seen multiple threads about display swapping PowerBook 15 and 17 inch laptops and it made me wonder about my iBook. Its screen takes a noticeable amount of time to warm up and it seems to be a bit yellow. An IPS screen would be a really nice upgrade even if at 1024x768. Can I do one of these display mods on it?

I don't know about 14s but I'm aware that a high resolution upgrade path existed for the PowerBook 12 (and probably would've worked on the iBook 12?)

Dell offered a 14inch 1600×1200 LCD in the Dimension 4100. No idea if it’s compatible, and the quoted viewing angles don’t smell like IPS...
Thanks! Gonna start looking for one of those. So, you know, it can sit for years collecting dust like my iBook.

One of these days I'll get back to fiddling with my PPC Macs. One of these days...sigh 😒

Been looking into this a bit more. That panel must have been an optional upgrade, as every actual Dimension 4100 I've found in the wild are 1024x768, same as the iBook.

I did find this though; and this and this (I seriously doubt they're actually in stock; but at that price I'll never know). So they're out there, somewhere. Bet they're rare as hen's teeth and priced accordingly if you can find one. Still don't know if they'd work in an iBook, but where there's a will there's a hack. I hope we find out someday!

It was optional. (And I just realised I got the laptop's name wrong LOL. It's Inspiron. Dimensions are desktops.)

The 14" iBook G4 uses a 30-pin LVDS connector, so it should definitely be possible to upgrade the LCD.

14.1in 1600x1200 displays were very rare; you'll have a hard time finding one. You should be able to source a 14.1in 1400x1050 display fairly easily though (and for cheap!), and installation shouldn't be *too* hard.

Im more worried about IPS than resolution, did any IPS panels exist? My TN iBook has a yellowish screen and still has the original dim CCFL backlight

I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 and it has this panel. Although I think it says its a 15". Is the 4100 smaller?

It’s 14.1 inches. The 8000 is 15 inches. For 15, 2048×1536 is where it’s at :)
Ah, well my mistake haha. I never had it sitting next to one of my 14" iBooks, but in my head it seemed like a similar form factor. And I tend to equate 15" to widescreen in my head too.
It's a really good display though, its 1600x1200. Though I'll say I've gotten used to scaling, and Windows 2000 looks real small on it lol
