Deleted original post--I figured out where the settings file was stored and successfully altered the defaults, which cured my problem.

Curious to know; what Mac are you using for stellaris?
I have a gaming PC and even there the game stutters on full screen, on my rMBP from 2012 it can't maintain 40fps at all on Mac OS. Wondering what you are using.

I'm using a Mac Pro late 2013 (2.3 HGz Intel Core i7, 16 BG), mostly running it clamshell with external display on a Dell U2414H Monitor. So far, works fine, 60 fps at 1920X 1080 settings, high quality settings.
That is similar to my MacBook Pro Retina, gives sharp and beautiful images. I believe that all MacBooks are now Retina MacBooks.
