Alpha Centauri A
If you've seen the commercial, you know what I'm talking about. If not, its here, and there is scroogle.com.

I, for one, don't care if google goes through my email for ads since it's all done by a computer. Obviously anyone human that the email in the commercial makes them think they actually need a second mortgage is an idiot. I could care less if it's just a system going through my email for keywords, it's not like they're actually invading my privacy and reading what I say. Plus I use AdBlock.

What are your thoughts on the commercial, and situation in general?

It is Microsoft trying to play catchup. They lost so much market share in the email business so long ago that they are trying to do anything they can to get people away from GMail and onto their new outlook service.

Microsoft is so lame. Google is very open and transparent about what they do with regards to targeted ads and your privacy, they do not sell your data to advertisers, a computer as opposed to an actual person scans your emails to serve targeted ads and the data they collect is something they zealously guard and protect, it being such an important and profitable asset for the company. As a user of their services I am aware of what Google does with my data and I have no issues with this (and honestly don't see why anyone else would) and I trust Google and it's practices concerning privacy. Microsoft is just desperate and it shows. Personally I'm glad to be "Microsoft free".

I use AdBlock too, so except for those times it accidentally gets through, I have not seen any internet advertising in a very, very long time. I even go out of my way and use MacTubes to not deal with advertising on YouTube.

I wasn't going to click on the ads (except maybe by accident), so they're not really gaining anything out of me except impressions.

I would be more concerned if they approached advertising like Facebook did for awhile - Letting advertisers use your friends photos to advertise a dating site or similar. Like the way you would do a search to find an order from Amazon, is pretty much the way they're doing their advertisements with the keywords, they never go through it, they just see if you've ever mentioned your dog or cat to show you an ad about pet food and toys from PetSmart.

And yeah, Microsoft is just scaring people into move over.
